Over the last couple of years I've become interested in prehistoric art from the Neolithic and Palaeolithic eras. In particular, what are known as the Venus figurines. It's fascinating to try to connect and draw threads through ancient cultures and formulate contemporary artistic responses to these. Hopefully engaging artistically with the rich and complex narrative of our past helps understanding of who we are today. What I've found inspiring is how exciting contemporary art becomes to me the more I know about prehistoric art. These are some studies, mostly from my Venus sketchbook influenced by art from the ice age.

Special thanks to archaeologist Don Hitchcock who gave me some insight into the representation of human form in prehistoric art. I highly recommend his website www.donsmaps.com which was a huge source of knowledge and inspiration to me.
